Get involved in exciting Year of Engineering events

Government and industry partners, including the IET and the Science Museum in London, aim to offer a million direct and inspiring experiences of engineering to young people throughout the year as part of the Year of Engineering campaign.

The Science Museum is currently looking for engineers from a variety of industries, organisations and disciplines to join them in supporting the Year of Engineering as volunteers in their exciting live events programme.

Through live programming and engaging with real life engineers the events will:

  • offer young people direct and inspiring experiences of engineering
  • encourage families to ‘take a closer look’ at engineering
  • showcase the variety and creativity of modern engineering in the UK.

The Science Museum events will be aimed at both families and school groups and will take place on the following dates:

  • Saturday 20 October to Sunday 28 October
  • Tuesday 6 November to Friday 9 November
  • Tuesday 13 November to Friday 16 November
  • Tuesday 20 November to Friday 23 November.

As a volunteer, you could design and run your own activity or help another engineer run theirs; you might take up residence in one of the Science Museum’s galleries to interpret objects around your field of engineering; or you could simply be available to chat with members of the public about who you are, what you do and how you got into engineering.

All volunteers will need to attend a training session at the Science Museum in September. This training will introduce you to the Science Museum and the basics of volunteering with them, and will be followed by a session on engaging with audiences to build your confidence when talking to the public. Training will be available on various weekdays, evenings and weekends throughout September, so everyone has the chance to attend.

The Science Museum will cover your expenses for coming in, and you’ll also get discounts in the Science Museum cafes and shops whilst volunteering. You’ll also have the chance to join the Science Museum volunteer programme, with opportunities to volunteer regularly in the future beyond this Year of Engineering Campaign.

If you’d like to take up this opportunity, please complete the application form by 1 July 2018. Please note that this opportunity is being offered by the Science Museum so, if you have any questions, please direct them to The Science Museum.

Before then, on Friday, 3 August 2018 the IET will be hosting another Engineering Open House Day at venues and organisations across the UK including the BBC, Google and Royal Mail. If your organisation would like to get involved and host an event, please email communications@theiet.org.
