The Year of Engineering launches in January 2018.

The year-long, cross-Government campaign announced today, 16 November 2017, aims to celebrate the great contribution that engineering makes to society, and encourage young people to join the profession. The UK Department for Transport is working in partnership with organisations and industry partners across the UK to support events and initiatives throughout the year, which give young people an inspiring experience of modern engineering.

The IET is one of the partners supporting this initiative and will join other Professional Engineering Institutions, plus organisations including London Transport Museum, Network Rail, the Science Museum Group, the RAF and Shell.

The campaign aims to raise the profile of engineering amongst 7-16 year olds and widen the pool of young people who are considering engineering as a future career. The campaign will build on the initiatives that already promote engineering as a career of choice. The initiative complements the IET’s Engineer a Better World campaign and the IET will be supporting the campaign through its Engineering Open House Day event on 27 July 2018.

Throughout the year, activities will demonstrate the variety of engineering roles available, how engineering makes a different to the world we live in and to people’s lives, challenge outdated engineering stereotypes and showcase the creative and innovative opportunities available in engineering as a career.
