The IET has awarded five outstanding engineering students with scholarships of up to £10,000 each.

The PhD students, from Imperial College London, the University of Glasgow, University of Surrey, Bournemouth University and University of Cambridge, have been chosen to receive IET Postgraduate Scholarships for their impressive work in the fields of engineering and technology.

Alison Gibbings from the University of Glasgow was awarded the £10,000 IET Postgraduate Scholarship for an outstanding researcher. Her research is around laser ablation of near earth asteroids.

Wassif Shabbir from Imperial College London was awarded the IET Hudswell International Research Scholarship of £5,000. His research is around hybrid electric vehicles.

Samantha Simons from the University of Surrey was awarded the IET Leslie H Paddle Scholarship of £5,000. Her studies are based around brain signals and Alzheimer’s disease.

This year’s two IET Postgraduate Scholarships of £2,500 each were awarded to Neil Vaughan from Bournemouth University and Dr Min Zhang from University of Cambridge, with their research around biomedical engineering and high temperature superconductors respectively.

The winners of the scholarships are selected by the IET Scholarships Committee and will be celebrated at the IET Achievement Awards ceremony on 20 November 2013.

Chair of the IET Scholarships Committee Trevor Grimshaw said: “We were inundated with applications for this year’s scholarships, showing that engineering talent is thriving. I would like to congratulate the five recipients, who clearly worked hard and are incredibly deserving of these scholarships.”
