An update on the Institution’s recent media coverage.

The IET continues to build its reputation as a source of expert knowledge.  In recent months, an increasing number of journalists have turned to the IET  for comment on a range of engineering and technology topics.

An IET-conducted survey to gauge public perceptions of engineering was launched as new IET president Barry Brooks took office in October. In total, the survey generated 59 pieces of media coverage including 19 broadcast interviews, such as BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and BBC Radio 5 Live’s Wake Up To Money programme.

In July, a front page article in the Metro newspaper included comment from Professor Will Stewart, chair of the IET’s Communications Policy Panel, on research findings indicating that mobile phones could be charged using alternative power sources. Professor Stewart was also interviewed live on the on Al Jazeera English television news channel commenting on the Microsoft takeover of Nokia.

Also in July, reaction from Dr Martyn Thomas, chair of the IET’s IT Policy Panel, on why the Government’s ‘porn block’ proposals were unrealistic, was covered by the BBC website, The Guardian and The Independent.

Jeremy Acklam from the IET’s Transport Policy Panel, and Peter Sheppard, chair of the IET Transport Sector, were interviewed on their reactions to the Spanish rail crash in July. Coverage was achieved on BBC television and radio news, Sky News, Channel 4 News online and in the Daily Mirror, The Independent and The Scotsman.

In August, IET reaction to GCSE and A Level results was featured in The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday and the Scottish Daily Mail.

International coverage continues to increase across a range of target publications such as China Electric Power News, China Energy News, The New Indian Express and The Hindu Business Line.
