Cranfield Professor Richard Wilding receives OBE in Queen’s Honours’ list.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements in the area of logistics and supply chain management, IET Fellow Professor Richard Wilding has been appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by HM Queen Elizabeth in last month’s 2013 New Year Honours' list.

A Professor from Cranfield School of Management, Prof Wilding received his OBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace last month, alongside Olympic champions Victoria Pendleton and Alistair Brownlee, and fashion designer Stella McCartney.

Receiving his honour from the Queen, Prof Richard Wilding commented, “It was a very proud day for my family and definitely one I shall never forget. It was an enormous honour to receive this award from the Queen in person and I feel very privileged to have been invited to Buckingham Palace and to stand alongside so many inspirational people.”

Prof Wilding’s honour was for ‘service to business’, and, he believes, “emphasises how our work at Cranfield School of Management, of taking academic knowledge and creating action in business, is so well recognised and appreciated by industry.”

He added, “I am extremely grateful to the IET for providing such a strong foundation to my career and providing continued opportunities to develop and grow. In a time when lifelong learning and continued innovation in a subject area is so essential, professional institutions are increasingly important to the success of the UK economy and also individuals.”

Prof Wilding has become a world-renowned expert on supply chain strategy and supply chain risk management and is regularly asked to speak at major industry conferences around the world. As part of his role at Cranfield, he has worked on complex supply chain projects with firms all over the world to pioneer new approaches to logistics and supply chain management.

A lecturer at Cranfield since 1998, Prof Wilding was appointed Professor of Supply Chain Strategy at Cranfield School of Management in 2005 and in 2010 received the Individual Contribution Award at the European Supply Chain Excellence Awards in recognition of his outstanding contribution to supply chain excellence.

He is both a European and Chartered Engineer, and, as well as being an IET Fellow, is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport. He is a director and trustee of Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport UK and a steering committee member of the Institute of Logistics Research Network, a global network of academics and practitioners involved in state-of-the-art logistics and supply chain research. He is also co-chairman of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport ‘Leaders in Supply Chain’ Forum, a group limited to the top 120 Logistics and Supply Chain Directors from Europe.
