The IET and the IMechE have announced the temporary co-location of their HQs at One Birdcage Walk in Westminster, London, should the proposed Savoy Place upgrade project proceed in 2013.

As previously reported in Member News online, the IET is currently undertaking a feasibility study into a comprehensive refurbishment of its London venue, IET London: Savoy Place.

If the project does proceed, the IET will require a temporary headquarters for its member facilities, events, library and meetings between mid-2013 and mid-2015.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) would be pleased to provide this home for the IET in One Birdcage Walk, the IMechE headquarters in central Westminster. This would enable the IET to retain a London presence and maintain its level of service to IET members.

The potential temporary co-location in One Birdcage Walk would include shared IMechE and IET library facilities, members’ business centre and a members’ lounge. The IET and IMechE both intend to maintain their current volume of meetings, lectures and events together at One Birdcage Walk. The temporary co-location would also allow the two Institutions to pursue closer working on such activities as accreditation, government policy advice, education and events.

In a joint statement, IMechE President Professor Isobel Pollock and IET President Professor Andy Hopper said: “Between us we represent some 250,000 professional engineers and technicians around the world. This temporary co-location is seen by both of our organisations as a major opportunity for our two leading engineering institutions to pursue closer working in the interests of the profession.”

The findings of the Savoy Place upgrade project feasibility study, including details of costs and operational impact, will be presented to the IET Board of Trustees at the end of 2012. If the Trustees choose to proceed with the scheme as currently proposed, early 2013 would be a time of preparation. Refurbishment work would then commence around August 2013, with an anticipated duration of two years.
