Mentors are useful at any stage in a member's career but particularly at times of rapid development. They are people who will listen, challenge and help members review their progress in order to encourage them to make the most of their opportunities as they work toward professional registration. Mentors may come from different backgrounds, but we try to pair within the same sector or specialism so you will meet like-minded members you may not have otherwise met.
To become a volunteer Mentor you will need to be and IET member and professionally registered with the Engineering Council and complete this form. Please state on the mentor registration form if you hold professional registration with another professional engineering institution.
Registering as an IET mentor enables you to:
On receipt of your mentor registration form, the IET will register you as a mentor and advise you of the next steps. You will then be sent a mentor welcome pack containing a variety of information on mentoring and mentor training as well as links to the online toolkit and volunteer information. As a new mentor, you will also be required to attend mentor training to help you in your role and explain the current professional registration process.
When an application for a mentor is received, we search our database for the most local mentor to the mentee who shares similar professional interests. Details of your mentoring linking will be sent to you by email to the address stated on your mentor registration form. If your details change or you change your professional status then please let us know so that we can ensure we make pairings based on the most recent information.
