Are you ready to apply?

Do you have a few years experience and want to gain professional registration but not sure where to start?

If you are established in your career or have several years relevant professional experience and are able to demonstrate examples of competence from your work related experience there is no need for you to submit an intent to register form.

If you are uncertain about the right level of professional registration for your career stage or if you are not clear on if you are ready to apply then there are steps you can take to help you make this decision.

Self-assessment of competence

If you are unsure whether or not you may be ready to apply then you should undertake a self-assessment of competence against the requirements for your chosen category of professional registration. This can be done using our online professional development system Career Manager

A self-assessment of competence will act as a gap analysis and will provide you with an overview of your current performance levels and allow you to focus your professional development should you identify any short falls in your existing skills set.  You can then set targeted objectives and actions which support you in gaining those objectives to fill any skill gaps you have identified.

If after you have undertaken a self-assessment it is clear that there are a number of areas that require further development, then submit and intent to register and let the IET support you through the rest of your initial professional development.  If you have only one or two areas for development, or are ready to apply then you can download an application pack for professional registration and familiarise yourself with the next steps in registration process.
