How is Office 365 different from Microsoft Office?

Office 365 only includes browser-based, limited functionality editions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. It does not include the Office 2016 desktop applications. Office Online allows for collaboration and simultaneous editing of documents between multiple individuals.

Am I eligible for an IET Volunteer Office 365 account?

Currently, provision of a full Office365 license is limited to certain roles, mainly those engaged in Communities or governance.  If the committee you belong to is set up in Office 365, then you will be provided with an account automatically, as soon as you have been added to our systems.  The account will be provided for your use whilst you continue to volunteer with the IET in this (or another qualifying) role.  At the point when you no longer have an eligible volunteer role, you will be given one month to ‘tidy’ your account and then it will be suspended.

Volunteer Office 365 email account names and email addresses will not be reused, to enable returning volunteers to re-activate their previous email address.

One of the most powerful functions within Office 365 is ‘Groups’.  When your account is set up you will automatically be allocated to the groups relevant to your volunteering role(s).  Please see the information below on how to use Groups.

If you believe you (or your group) are eligible for an account but do not have one, please contact the team emailing volunteer@theiet.org.

What domain name will the IET Volunteer Office 365 service use?

The IET needed to choose a distinct and professional email address that clearly identifies IET volunteers from IET staff, so the domain name is ietvolunteer.org.

Is IET Volunteer Office 365 replacing the IET email alias?

We are planning to make Office 365 available only to some volunteers for use specifically in support of their IET role(s).  This is due to strict licensing requirements from Microsoft.  Therefore, it is not a replacement for the existing IET email alias service, which is for personal use by members.

I already have an @theiet.org or iee.org email alias address, can I use that instead to gain access to IET Volunteer Office 365?

Unfortunately not, the IET Volunteer Office 365 service is a different service to the IET email alias service and requires a separate email address to distinguish it from ‘theiet.org’ or ‘iee.org’.

Will I get to keep my IET Volunteer Office 365 account if I stop being an IET Volunteer?

No, your email account will be closed shortly after you stop volunteering for the IET, to comply with Microsoft licence restrictions.  Your email address will never get reallocated to another person so if you return to volunteering at a later date your account can be reactivated.

What can a volunteer use their IET Volunteer Office 365 account for?

Office 365 can only be used by IET volunteers for the purposes of undertaking IET related volunteering activities.
