What are LNs?
IET Local Networks deliver activities that explore topics relating to science, engineering and technology. They offer opportunities, at events and online, for likeminded individuals to share knowledge and network. Their events are suitable for professionals as well as members of the general public and are free to attend for members and non-members alike. All of the LNs around the world are led by committees of volunteer members.
As well as expanding your knowledge, attending LN events can also count towards your Continued Professional Development (CPD).
What do we look for in a LN volunteer?
An individual who wants to be more engaged and is passionate about raising general awareness of science, engineering, and technology.
What are the benefits?
By becoming a LN volunteer, you will be able to:
- learn new skills
- gain more awareness of SET topics
- network and make new connections
- count your activity towards CPD
- be affiliated with a professional international body.
Meet Virginia Hodge
Past IET trustee Virginia Hodge highlights how volunteering for the IET has shaped her own career, having given her the chance to network, hone new skills and gain experience in different roles.
“I wanted to understand a bit more about engineering and to develop myself. I felt I could learn a lot from volunteering as well as bringing my own experiences to the table. Volunteering will often give you a lot of soft skills that can be quite difficult to pick up. The leadership and managerial skills I learnt when I was in the YMS has helped in my career. Also, through volunteering for the IET, I have met people all over the world and learnt about different cultures from them, which benefits my current job as I'm working in an international team.”
