What's the technology behind the RRS Sir David Attenborough?

The RRS Sir David Attenborough promises to be one of the most technologically advanced scientific maritime vessels ever built.

The 128-metre long vessel has gained a considerable amount of media interested as its name was originally decided through a poll where the public chose their favourite name, Boaty McBoatface.

Thankfully sense has prevailed and the boat, when built, will be named after the broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough.

The name Boaty McBoatface will still be given, but to a submarine onboard.

The RRS Sir David Attenborough will cost £200 million to build and will be operational in 2019.

UK Shipbuilder Cammell Laird has selected a Rolls-Royce design for the UK’s future polar research ship.

Commissioned by the UK’s National Environment Research Council (NERC), and operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) the Rolls-Royce design meets a demanding list of design requirements.
