The Cyber Security Skills Pathways Mapping Initiative

It also outlines the challenges to achieving this and defines an objective of developing a sustainable pipeline of home-grown cybersecurity professionals. Since its publication in 2016, a range of initiatives have been launched in the private and public sectors, and a number have seen high take-up rates and encouraging early results. The various initiatives allow individuals to get interested in cybersecurity, demonstrate their aptitude for the subject, and take steps to join the workforce of the future.

To support this achievement, and to contribute towards the NCSS objective, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is leading a project to map UK Cyber Security Pathways. This will highlight many excellent initiatives and programmes which exist, as well as map out who they are aimed at, and where they fit into developing pathways. It will also illustrate where there are gaps that need to be tackled.

The project is supported by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and its output will aid the development of government policy on cybersecurity skills and professionalisation. We would like to invite all initiatives and activities aimed to create a pathway into a cybersecurity career to get involved in the mapping exercise. All related initiatives are welcome - both those that are directly focussed on cybersecurity and those, more broadly, which are a stepping-stone for getting into cybersecurity.

Following the submission period, a meeting will be held in October 2018 at the IET to review the project and engage in discussions with academics, practitioners and other institutions. The IET expects to publish a paper by early 2019 to share findings from the submissions and a summary of the different pathways possible to get into Cyber Security.

If you have a relevant initiative and are interested in participating, please send details via email to sep@theiet.org by 31 January 2019. There is no cost to being included in the mapping. We simply ask submissions include:

  • A brief description of the initiative
  • Some details about whom it is focussed at
  • Any pre-requisites
  • How the initiative is funded
  • Current and future expected outputs and outcomes
  • Key contact details plus any other relevant information

Q: What are the benefits of being part of the Cyber Security Mapping Initiative?

A: The benefits are two-fold and include helping to raise the breadth of initiatives available for growing cybersecurity skills in the UK and driving visibility of initiatives with candidates/other stakeholders.

Q: Can any initiative be included?

A: Yes. The project is open to a wide range of groups, including but not limited to competitions, clubs, courses, work experience programmes, degree courses and apprenticeships.

Q: Does it have to be cyber security-focused?

A: All relevant initiatives are welcome - both those that are directly focused on cybersecurity and those, more broadly, which are a stepping-stone for getting into cybersecurity.

Q: Does the initiative have to be free?

A: The cyber pathways mapping welcomes both free initiatives and where a fee is charged; we ask initiatives to describe this in how their initiative is funded.

Q: What should I include to describe an initiative?

A:

Q: What if we have more than one initiative?

A: If you have more than one thing you are doing, we ask that each is described separately within one overall email response.

Q: Should we include metrics in describing outputs?

A: Yes, if you have them. Any data or impact produced will help us understand what you have achieved in terms of numbers of people, or courses developed, careers started etc.

Q: What do we need to do to be included?

A: Just take a few moments to share your initiative by sending an email to sep@theiet.org by 31 January 2019 with a description of your project.

Q: Should we provide a contact for the initiatives?

A: It would be helpful if you provide a contact point (this is optional) so we can ask further questions about the information you have submitted. We may also ask questions which will also help us understand how best to represent initiatives in the mapping.

Q: Will my submission be published?

A: We plan to publish a summary of initiatives in the mapping exercise. Our aim is to produce an output in October and a report early in 2019.
