IET factfile: Expect the unexpected

There is no doubt that the introduction of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) can benefit individuals and communities.

Improving road safety, providing increased mobility – especially for those sections of the community whose mobility is restricted - and greater time and resource efficiency are among the perceived benefits of CAVs. But this change also has the potential to bring about profound and unintended consequences which will have an impact on the way we must consider the technology, design and deployment of CAVs. To explore some of these potential issues, the IET brought together experts from transport, local government, academia, telecoms and technology to think through the implications of five everyday scenarios for the different stakeholders involved in the design and introduction of CAVs.

This report explores some of the unintended consequences that emerged and provides a number of recommendations which may help to mitigate the impact of such consequences.
