Internet voting in the UK

This thought leadership paper discusses the technical and societal issues that will need to be addressed if the UK wishes to move towards an online electoral system in the future. This report considers what would be required of an internet voting system. It reviews the motivations for internet voting, discusses the risks associated with it, and the socio-technical issues associated with the introduction of any such system to justify and maintain public trust.

Written for policymakers and for those concerned with electronic voting (e-voting), it seeks to provide well-informed and authoritative technical advice on the issues, challenges and risks around such systems, with respect to their requirements, design, deployment and operation.
