Hi,

The principle of REF is similar to differential protection scheme. In the case of differential protection, any fault within primary and secondary winding is detected, where as REF protection will detect only for one winding, in most cases secondary winding whose neutral is grounded. There are plenty of resources available in internet on REF protection for transformers.

Regards,

Pradeep
