Thank you for your article and for raising this important topic. At the heart of the debate is the funadamental question of whether we see "security" as a measure of the trust, understanding and mutual interests we share with our neighbours, or in terms of the height of the fences and ferocity of armaments we put between us and them. Many commentators, such as Robert Wright (excellent TED talk Link Removed), argue that the arrow of history is pointing strongly towards the former.

Of course, any such debate must take into account the interests of those who livelihoods depend upon the armed forces and related industries. I hope they will join in the discussion.
