Exploiting Scotland’s Shale Gas Opportunities

A briefing from IET Engineering Policy Group Scotland.

This document comprises material presented and derived during an Engineering Policy Group Scotland ‘Holyrood Briefing’ on Wednesday 26th February 2014, at the Scottish Parliament. The event was hosted and chaired by Murdo MSP, Convener of the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee.

Professor Rebecca Lunn - Head of Department, of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Strathclyde gave the included keynote presentation.

It is suggested that with enough shale gas natural resources, and the right regulation, the mature extraction technology could be used to safely provide part of Scotland’s energy needs pending availability of sufficient alternative sustainable energy means.

Shale gas could be considered as part of Scotland’s energy mix policy debate.

Note:  The IET formal Position Statement on Shale Gas Extraction will be delivered elsewhere on the IET website.
