Transforming engineering education

Diplomas are new qualifications for 14-19 year olds, to be studied alongside other qualifications such as GCSEs and A-Levels. The Engineering Diploma was one of the first five Diplomas to be introduced from September 2008.

The IET is pleased with the way the Engineering Diploma is being implemented. Over the past year, almost 3,000 students have taken up the new qualification, and this is expected to increase significantly in coming years. The Diploma now offers a unique opportunity. In the past, if taught in schools at all, engineering has tended to be an extra-curricular activity. The Diploma has the potential to place engineering at the heart of the school curriculum for the first time. However, there are challenges still to overcome, including improving the public profile of the new qualification.
