About this event

The aircraft industry is now moving rapidly forward with the development of hybrid and all-electric aircraft for a range of applications.  These will progressively replace some of the roles presently undertaken by solely gas turbine or piston engine powered aircraft.  Major manufacturers such as Airbus are investing heavily in this new market. There is now a view in the industry that medium and large future aircraft will move  towards a hybrid system whereas there are also rapid developments in the near future for small, electrically powered vertical take-off vehicles for short range applications A range of enabling technologies such as power storage and integrated propulsion system design are moving forward rapidly, making the commercial realisation of electrically powered passenger aircraft for short to medium haul roles increasingly realistic.  This lecture will discuss the reasons behind this change and the technological challenges this presents.
