About this event

Robotic systems are perhaps at their most valuable when carrying out tasks that would otherwise put humans in danger. In some cases they give us visibility or enable operations in environments so extreme humans could not even wilfully venture - space, nuclear and deep subsea.

The opportunity to exploit the power of robotics in these applications has been recognised by the UK Government, with “Robotics and Artificial Intelligence for Extreme & Challenging Environments.” forming a key element of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF), resulting in millions of £GBP funding being injected into the sector.

Robots operating in these extreme environments face some unique challenges but also share many – extremes of temperature, pressure and uncertainty of position to name but a few.

The IET’s Robotics in Extreme Environments lecture aims to connect expertise from a range of these discrete industry sectors, to share problems, exchange solutions and create opportunities for horizontal innovation.  This event will take place within the ENGenious Symposium (running 4-6 Sept 2018 at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.)

Please note: This IET lecture is free to attend and you don’t need to have purchased a ticket for ENGenious Symposium in order to attend.

Our speakers:

Dr Jeremi Gancet, Technologies, Applications and Research Division Manager at Space Applications Services, Belgium.

Mr Gancet received a MSc (2001) in computer science from the Université Laval, Quebec, Canada, and a PhD (2005) in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence from the National Polytechnical Institute of Toulouse, working with the Laboratoire d’Analyse et d’Architecture des Systèmes (LAAS), Toulouse, France. After leading the robotics related activities at Space Applications Services for 12 years, he was appointed division manager for Applications, Technologies and Research. He led activities in many ESA and EC (FP6, FP7, H2020) R&D projects for the last 10 years. He is the coordinator of the ongoing H2020 DexROV project (Dexterous ROV intervention in presence of communication latency), addressing subsea robotic operations, and also leads activities in space robotics applications (planetary exploration, in-orbit servicing, etc.).

Topic: DexROV - a new paradigm for remote subsea robotic interventions using a satellite link.

Presentation synopsis: DexROV is an EC H2020 funded project, whose final trials took place in the summer of 2018. DexROV aims to develop the technologies allowing to perform remote monitoring and control of a ROV from a far distance, through a satellite link, with an operational concept and tools allowing to mitigate the communication latency. The project is developing a skid featuring advanced perception capabilities and manipulation capabilities, with 2 electric arms and three finger dexterous end-effectors, all featured with force sensors. On the control center side, a novel exoskeleton interface is developed to offer intuitive interaction means to the ROV pilots.
