Supporting your mental and physical wellness

If you’re losing sleep over the current global situation, having a hard time coping with feelings of stress or anxiety, or facing unforeseen difficulties that are threatening your ability to finish your degree, we’ve got a wide range of wellbeing and mental health support to connect you to.

Anxiety UK

As a student member you can get free membership to Anxiety UK, as well as free and quick access to counselling if required.

Counselling support

Mental wellbeing is just as important and physical health. It’s important to talk, that’s why we offer our members counselling and therapy grants. Therapists are still taking appointments online or over the phone; get in touch to find out more.

How are you sleeping?

Three in ten people have sleep problems. If you’ve had less than six hours of sleep, then you’ll likely see a 20% cognitive decline the next day. This means you’re not functioning as well as you could be; not getting enough rest at night might be having a negative effect on other areas of your life.

Foothold has partnered with the NHS-approved sleep clinic, Sleepstation, to launch science-driven sleep support for those struggling to get a good night’s sleep.

The clinically validated sleep support programme is delivered in two stages:

Stage one - the Sleepstation experts will analyse your current sleep patterns from a sleep diary. They’ll send you a comprehensive report, along with advice and ideas on how to treat any sleep issues that are affecting your daily life.

Stage two - If your sleep problems persist, this stage uses the most effective treatment currently available for insomnia: CBTi (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia). CBTi is more effective than sleeping pills and is recommended for even the most severe cases of insomnia.

It’ll help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer and get better quality sleep. Check out Foothold’s sleep support page for more info.

Support for carers

You might be caring for a relative whilst trying to get your degree or working on your placement year, which is why Foothold offers support to carers when they need it most. From practical help, like equipment or practical adjustments in your home, to advice and information on financial assistance for respite costs, get in touch to find out what support is available to you.

We’re here for you

Problems don’t happen in isolation; they often have a knock-on effect in many aspects of our lives.

Worrying about a practical problem is likely to make you feel stressed and could lead to anxiety and depression. Stress and mental health issues can also create or exacerbate practical problems. They might, for example, affect our ability to work, which may in turn mean we end up struggling financially.

Whatever you’re going through, you don’t have to do it alone.

Foothold is an independent charity and all enquiries are completely confidential. You can get in touch with them directly at hello@myfoothold.org or on +44 (0)20 7344 5498 between 9pm to 5pm, UK time, Monday to Friday.

Studying for the upcoming (online) exam season?

With university campuses closed and social distancing rules taking effect, you might be expected to take your exams online. If you’re struggling to focus on your studies, our Revision Toolkit can help you take control, be confident in what you’ve learned and ready to take on your exams.
