Types of membership

Career development

Start as you mean to go on. Plot your successful career path before it even begins.

Professional registration is formal recognition that you have met standards of knowledge, understanding and competence set by the Engineering Council. IET Fellows and Members can apply for registration with the Engineering Council through the IET.

Professional registration demonstrates to your employer and peers, your commitment to the profession and to professional standards. Becoming professionally registered provides recognition of your expertise and offers you higher earnings potential, improved career prospects and greater influence within your organisation and industry.

The different titles are: CEng – Chartered Engineer, IEng - Incorporated Engineer, EngTech - Engineering Technician and ICTTech – ICT Technician.

Following a licensing agreement signed in December 2012 with BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, IET members will be able to apply for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) via the IET from summer 2013.

Professional development

Professional development makes you employable throughout your life. It centres around competencies: the recognised knowledge, skills and attributes needed to deliver results in your chosen field.

Career Manager

Career Manger is the IET’s online skills development and recording tool, providing simple registration/membership application functionality, with comprehensive competence management and CPD recording for members.

IET Advantage

Electrical safety and best practice

The IET is at the forefront in promoting electrical safety. The 1st Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations was published in 1882. Since then the Regulations have been regularly updated to reflect technical developments and changes in best practice. In July 2011 the IET published the first amendment to 17th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).

Shaping the profession

IET members are role models for the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians. The IET plays a key role in engineering education in the UK and internationally.

We accredit over 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate courses and we support teachers and lecturers in engaging students with STEM subjects by providing free teaching resources and supporting engineering-themed educational enhancement and enrichment activities.


The IET engages with thousands of schools to help inspire young people towards engineering, through our online resource Faraday.

Awards and scholarships

The IET rewards engineering aspirations, enterprise and excellence with a range of annual Scholarships and Awards.

  • IET Scholarships recognise, support and encourage students entering or currently studying within the engineering and technology sector.
  • Achievement Awards recognise and reward outstanding individuals who excel within the engineering and technology fields.

The IET runs a number of Policy Panels which provide strategic, expert advice to government on key policy topics including: Communications, Energy, IT and Transport.

The IET arranges meetings and policy briefings, collaborates with other organisations and responds to important consultations throughout the year in order to influence UK government policy.

We also seek to help shape the policies of the devolved administrations and the European Commission.
