Governance for the Future
Information about changes to the governance of the IET.
Two independent governance reviews have found that our Council is not effective. The Governance for the Future proposals address this and other areas where we need change, and 63.7% of members voting at a previous Special General Meeting (SGM) in September 2015 asked that we continue with these proposals and bring them to a second SGM held in February 2016.
The proposals will create a more agile and efficient Council, and help us to attract highly experienced members to our Board of Trustees. They include:
- creating a new Volunteer Engagement Board reporting to the Board of Trustees, in addition to the two existing Main Boards
- reducing the size of Council, and improving communication by actively involving its members in one of the three Main Boards
- combining elections with merit-based appointments to the Main Boards to ensure an optimum mix of skills and experience – and creating a clearer pathway for members to reach the Board of Trustees via Council.
At the February 2016 SGM the membership approved the changes to the Bye-laws and the Council Regulations necessary to implement the proposals. Implementation is now being overseen by a Steering Group of Trustees, Council members and staff, and is on schedule to deliver the necessary changes to effect the proposals in time for the start of the 2016-17 Session on 1 October 2016. If you have any queries about the changes please contact the IET.
