Robot challenge inspires student innovation

Students from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) have attended the first Lego Robot Design Competition.

Students from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) at the first Lego Robot Design Competition The on-campus competition aims to inspire students to study new areas of mechanical engineering, as well as giving them the opportunity to obtain general and practical understanding of the industry.

First and second year UNNC students took part in the competition, which required them to design, build and program a robot with the same Lego kit In groups of two or three. In the month running up to the competition they had to bring their ideas to life, gaining valuable experience working as a team on a real engineering project.

During the competition, each team was given a series of tasks for their robot to complete in a set amount of time and each robot was evaluated by an expert team on its concept originality, design skills and function and stage performance.

The first prize went to the device designed to behave like a small shovel vehicle, with other teams recognised for their implementation of ideas to solve real-world problems.

Thanks to its success, the UNNC is planning to make the competition into an annual event and aims to invite students from other universities to take part in future years.
