Students and young professionals are being invited to design a poster on game changing satellite applications for a chance to win a place at the Reinventing Space Conference.
The IET Satellite Systems and Applications Network has launched a new competition for students and young professionals. The Best Poster Competition - Game Changing Satellite Applications, challenges entrants to create a poster on game changing satellite applications and their commercialisation.
The purpose of this competition is to look at new business opportunities enabled by satellite systems and applications. The opportunity is broad in its scope; it is looking for effective means of utilising satellites, whether the solution is a product or platform, hardware or software, or even an idea as fundamental as an algorithm.
The network is looking for innovative and novel new applications of state-of-the-art technologies that both enable new satellite capabilities on orbit and the respective services on the ground and their commercial potential.
The winner will be invited to present their work at the Reinventing Space Conference (RISpace), which takes place at the Royal Society in London this coming October. The prize, which includes accommodation, offers some career-enhancing opportunities, with the winner getting their work published by the IET as well as being given the chance to network with industry experts.
There are also opportunities for mentoring and skill development, plus all entrants will receive feedback on their work from the judges, meaning even those who don’t win will be able to improve their communication skills.
“I am glad that we as a professional satellite community are reaching out to younger engineers and encouraging them to produce innovative commercial ideas for the use of satellite systems,” says Roger Dewell, an IET Satellite Systems and Applications Network Executive Team member.
“I hope we will be seeing some exciting new ideas emerging through these poster entries, demonstrating that younger space engineers and scientists have a commercial awareness alongside their technical expertise.
This competition should align well with one of the key focus areas of the RISpace Conference, so I think the results of the poster competition will be of great interest to conference delegates,” he adds.
