Transfer to MIET and reap the benefits

If you're student days numbered and you’re now focusing on getting your career started, don’t overlook one simple exercise that can help you from the outset; transferring your membership status from 'student' to 'MIET'.

This cements your progression into graduate life by adding those all important designatory letters to the end of your name, and all you need is to have achieved a degree qualification.

Once you have received your degree notification, you simply fill out the relevant form we'll send you upon graduation (or if you lose it go to the transfer or upgrade your membership page and complete the MIET section) and the transfer is done!

Your membership will automatically change upon graduation, but if you don't transfer to MIET status then you will become solely an 'associate' and not get the industry recognised post-nominals and the benefits that come with them.

MIET status is seen by the industry as the IET's stamp of approval and can help your CV stand out in a crowd and demonstrate professionalism and commitment to your career development. Indeed, many employers see MIET members as able and proactive potential employees who want to work towards professional registration. They will often look on those who have a clear professional development path more favourably, and so the simple status transfer could lead to the job you’ve strived for. Therefore why not shout out about it on your CV and be sure that yours gets straight to the top of the pile!

“...MIET shows that you are an active member...and hence must have some level of competence and professionalism”

“In regards to career progression, I would say that being MIET shows that you are an active member of an engineering institution and hence must have some level of competence and professionalism,” says David Lloyd, MIET. “Personally I guess that it shows that people are on the path to becoming chartered or incorporated engineers etc, and can see the benefits to being part of a large organisation of like-minded engineers.”

Whatever stage you may be with your career and education, is it of the utmost importance that you regularly update your contact details with the IET. Without the correct address in our database you won’t be able to receive the all important form, or any other information or career advice we regularly send out. For example, members will soon be sent out a list of IET business partners who are currently looking for fresh, new graduates, so make sure you don’t lose out!

But just in case you’re head’s been buried in books for the last few months, here’s a reminder of the many other benefits IET membership offers you at this important stage in your career development.

“As a member you receive the fortnightly publication Engineering and Technology, and are permitted access to online news, communities and libraries. You will also have frequent opportunities to attend discussions and lectures where you’ll be able to network with fellow professionals, and the odd VIP,” highlights Jonathan Hobbis, MIET.

“I think that there is a huge range of ways that it helps your career,” adds David. “By being a member and getting involved in your local network you can also gain skills in negotiation, leadership, financial management, presentation, etc which will always help you to come across as the best candidate in job interviews. Other members can also help to mentor you, provide references and even suggest job openings before anyone else hears about them,” he concludes.
