The Overseas Research Students awards scheme (ORS award) is one of many schemes that supports international students. Below is some further information that may give you an idea of what support you can get as an overseas student in the UK. Be aware that this is one of many similar schemes that offer support, and it is worth spending some time researching support you may be able to get. Contact the universities you are applying to, as well as the British Council, Universities UK and also ask for advice in your home country.
The ORS awards Scheme provides for the partial remission of tuition fees for overseas (i.e. non-EU) research students of outstanding merit and research potential. The ORS awards do not cover maintenance/travel expenses. The higher education institutions individually select their ORSAS award holders and administering individual awards.
An ORS award cannot be held concurrently with a fully funded scholarship such as a Marshall Scholarship or one held under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan. Apart from these restrictions, any other scholarship/award can be held concurrently with an ORS award as long as it does not cover what an ORS award covers (i.e. the difference between the overseas and the home fees).
Applications for the award are made via the UK academic institution where you have conditionally been accepted for admission as a registered research student for a full-time course of study and for a higher degree. ORS awards are not offered to those undertaking taught postgraduate or undergraduate courses. Applicants are allowed to submit an application for an award through only one academic institution. Candidates who do apply through more than one institution will be disqualified from the competition.
Hard copies and electronic versions of the application form and booklet explaining the ORS awards scheme are now available from UK University registrars/secretaries for this years' competition.
