How IET.tv’s Research Seminar Channel benefited the University of Leeds

The University’s EEE UII used IET.tv to raise its awareness and lead to more research collaboration projects

The University of Leeds’ EEE UII (Earth, Energy and Environment University Interdisciplinary Institute) is a virtual organisation, funded by the university to facilitate the development of interdisciplinary research collaborations both internally, with its 140 members (across a number of faculties and institutes), and externally with academic and industrial organisations at both national and international levels.

Knowledge and technology transfer is of vital importance, and recently the institute decided to video a seminar series with speakers of national and international interest. The EEE also wanted the ability to upload the seminar series on the EEE Institute website so that those who could not attend could still view the presentations. Web streaming the seminar would also reduce the carbon footprint of interested parties as they would not need to travel to the seminars.

“Raising awareness and the profile of the EEE Institute and the University of Leeds regionally, nationally and internationally is a key objective,” says John Slater, the institute’s commercial manager/facilitator. “The greater the awareness, the greater the potential for collaboration on research projects. Therefore the opportunity offered by IET.tv to provide an international platform for the videos from our seminar series, and an excellent format for those viewing, was too good to miss.

“The IET.tv research channel admin account allows us to easily add info about our presentation, upload speaker images and synchronise our slides.

“We have found the interface user friendly and very reliable and the resulting presentations worked very well. In addition, The University of Leeds is fortunate to have an excellent Media Services department who have been able, through the quality of their filming capabilities, to show off the IET.tv services to their best effect.”

Slater has found that using IET.tv has really helped the institute, enabling it to share knowledge rapidly and effectively and sustain meaningful relationships with organisations across the world and help raise awareness and the profile of the EEE with other institutions via a global network. In addition the institute has found that it has led to greater opportunities for collaboration nationally and internationally. But it doesn’t end there, the institute plans to continue to use IET.tv to its best advantage, and also try new things, such as branching into live broadcasts using the technology.

“The EEE UII is very pleased to have been an early user of this service and we’re delighted to learn that to date our seminar series has the greatest number of hits on the IET.tv research seminar channel. We at the EEE UII see this technology as vital to our aim of sharing knowledge rapidly and efficiently, and sustaining meaningful relationships with organisations across the world.

“We have not to date undertaken a live presentation, but feel in the future this will be a natural step to take,” he adds.
