Armoured Core 4

A review of Armoured Core 4 for the PS3 and X360.

505 Games, £39.99
PS3, X360, Out June 22nd
Rating: TBC

Those X360 owners out there who love mech games may well remember Chromehounds for its simplicity, fun, but possibly more so for its online play. While it was a good game, it didn’t really have much of a storyline, or its own style. But From Software; the creators of Chromehounds, aim to put that right with Armoured Core 4, a Japanese mech-fest if there ever was one.

Putting tons of emphasis on customisation, every single aspect of your mech can be upgraded, and even painted in whichever colour takes your fancy. Once you’ve created you mech, it’s time to kick some butt online, which has to be said is a proper challenge, but still good fun.

If this isn’t enough for you, then your Frankenstein-esque mech creations can be swapped with other players online, or you can trade your personalised emblems, meaning that once you’ve created your mech and slapped your emblem all over it, it’ll be one of a kind and could end up being as sought after as some of the rare items you’ll find on eBay.

But the downside to the game are the controls, which can lead to some hilarious, yet often frustrating antics both online and off. The camera controls don’t work too well when you’re in the thick of a fight, but for real mech fans, you’ll still have a blast playing this.

We reckon…

3 stars.
