Be your own guru, personal and business enlightenment in just 3 days

Be your own guru is your essential guide to emotional and spiritual intelligence, the keys to personal excellence and phenomenal profits.

Author: Olivia Stefanino
ISBN: 184112737X

Going way beyond the standard coaching fare of goals, action plans and time management, be your own guru introduces the emotional and spiritual dimension that has been proven time and time again to produce remarkable, long-lasting and measurable improvement in both personal happiness and business profits. This is not just an action plan, but a whole new way of thinking and being – skills that can be used in every situation.

Interweaving stories and explanation, Be your own guru is packed with exercises, fly on the wall case studies and awe-inspiring anecdotes. In one powerful package, it delivers a unique process that guarantees to put you firmly at the help of both your work and personal life.

This book does come across as a bit too ‘American’ in its you can do it attitude, however, once given a chance 'Be Your Own Guru' can offer some interesting tips and insights to help you overcome obstacles in both your home and work environments. This in turn can lead to less anxiety and more happiness with your role in life, so it’s all good really!

The author considers that most training focuses on skills improvements, but in truth this kind of training is pointless if you’re not truly motivated to turn the good habits into lasting ones. With this in mind, she looks at helping you work out what makes you tick, as understanding yourself will help you have a chance to do something about getting where you want to be. Once you really know what you want from life, it’s much easier to go get it!

Written in an easy to follow format with a ‘true story’ narrative running throughout, the book is interspersed with analysis, practical tools and helpful small ‘guru success tips’ to set you off in the right direction. Also, at the end of almost every chapter is a ‘points to ponder’ box out that concludes the main points of the chapter and gives you food for though.

The analysis, however, is the part that really makes you sit back and think, and in a nutshell, lets you know that the only thing really stopping you is...actually...you. Using the examples of past customers throughout the book, Stefanino explains the importance of letting go of the past, forgiveness, dealing with negative emotions and allowing your own inner processes to tap into the creativity that we all have within us, but sometimes seems out of reach. The book alternates between a typical corporate training seminar, set over three days (and with measurable results to prove the fantastic results!) and the theory behind why her techniques work. She demonstrates how personal effectiveness and joy expand into our entire lives, influencing everything from out personal relationships to our business decisions.

True, it’s a bit ‘arty farty’ in its approach to improving yourself, but it definitely does a good job if you open your mind to it. A title more suited to fans of self-help books, it is still definitely worth trying out; and a useful one to dip in and out of as and when you need a little push in the right direction.
