To become a registered EngTech, you first need to become a member of the IET, who are licensed by the Engineering Council (UK) to award registration to Engineering Technicians.
Eligibility for EngTech registration is assessed in a process called the Professional Review. This is a 'peer review' by engineering professionals that looks at professional experience, your competence as a technician and your commitment to the profession. Professional competence broadly falls into five main categories:
- Technical Knowledge
- Application of Knowledge
- Supervision
- Interpersonal Skills
- Professional Conduct
As a general guideline, the typical qualifications required for EngTech registration are:
- A technical certificate as part of an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship
- An approved level 3 NVQ or SVQ
- A work based learning route approved by a licensed professional engineering institution
- A National Certificate or Diploma in Engineering or Construction
Candidates without the appropriate qualifications may still be eligible for EngTech registration. They may be able to present their experience in the form of a Technical Report to satisfy the knowledge requirements for EngTech registration. Alternatively they may wish to opt to obtain a suitable qualification to gain registration.
For individuals who have just finished college and started work as a technician, a guideline of three years post-qualification applied technical experience is expected to provide sufficient evidence for assessment purposes. The time taken to achieve the correct level of competence may vary considerably between candidates but as a guideline, it is unlikely that an adequate range of training and experience will be acquired in less than three years.
