Become an Engineering Technician (EngTech)
Professional Engineering Technicians (EngTech) contribute to the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, operation or maintenance of all kinds of products, equipment, processes or services.
The engineering profession in the United Kingdom operates through 35 engineering Institutions which are licensed by Engineering Council UK (ECUK) to put suitably qualified members on its Register of Engineers. The Register has three sections:
- Engineering Technician
- Incorporated Engineer
- Chartered Engineer.
These titles are protected by the Engineering Council's Royal Charter and may only be used by registrants.
What is EngTech?
A valuable, portable, internationally recognised award that can be carried throughout your career, demonstrating your competence and your commitment to a professional approach.
What do Engineering Technicians do?
Professional Engineering Technicians (EngTech) contribute to the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, operation or maintenance of all kinds of products, equipment, processes or services. In particular they:
- use creativity and skills within defined fields of technology;
- apply proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems;
- apply safe working systems;
- carry supervisory or technical responsibility.
Supporting the UK
Engineering Technicians and professional engineers are both essential for the UK to have a healthy economy. The demand for Engineering Technicians far exceeds that for professional engineers (IEng, CEng). However, IEng and CEng represent a potential development route for Engineering Technicians.
Why register?
Personal development (part of CV development and opportunities to widen career choices),Self esteem (satisfaction of achieving an independent, well established, internationally recognised award), Client confidence (knowing you can assure consistent service), Employer assurance (demonstrated competence to contribute professionally to the business).
To become a registered EngTech:
You need to become a member of one of nearly 30 Institutions specifically licensed by ECUK to award registration to Engineering Technicians, (IET being one of those institutions) and show that you meet the requirements of ECUK's United Kingdom Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). This means demonstrating that you have the necessary technical and personal competence, and are committed to keeping these up to date and to acting in a professional and socially responsible manner. The award involves an assessment, by practising engineering professionals.
Getting registered may be more straightforward if you have relevant educational or vocational qualifications, or have completed an advanced apprenticeship. But the profession recognises that you can develop knowledge and skills in other ways, and the Institution you join will have ways of assessing this.
Typical qualifications include:
- a technical certificate as part of an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship
- an approved level 3 NVQ or SVQ
- a work based learning route approved by a licensed professional engineering institution
- a National Certificate or Diploma in Engineering or Construction
