How do NVQs relate to other qualifications?

Can you explain the NVQ equivalent within the National Qualification Framework.

There is a National Qualification Framework that goes up to a level 8.  Degrees are level 6, GCSE's are level 2 and A levels are level 3.

NVQ's (National Vocational Qualifications) are offered at different levels of difficulty right up to level 5 in the National Qualifications Framework.  They define and verify competencies that an employee should demonstrate, providing evidence, in order to be recognised as able to perform a defined role in industry – e.g. Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

NVQ's are usually complemented by academic qualifications (technical certificates) to an equivalent level to ensure the appropriate background theory is also understood.  Depending on the level you train to, an NVQ can be the equivalent of GCSE's; A-levels; HND's or Foundation degrees.
