British Business Embassy days - Energy Summit - The Journey to Smart Energy (Day 1)

The first day of the Energy Summit, held on 6 August 2012, focused on the need for a smarter energy sector to meet the world’s energy and environmental needs, and trends in the UK’s renewable energy sector.

Speakers included Rt Hon Edward Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change and the Deputy CEO of RenewableUK, the wind and marine renewables industries association, along with leaders of several companies including Centrica, UK Power Networks, Logica, Atkins, SSE Renewables, Mott MacDonald and Alstom.

The Summary of the 2-day Energy Summit summarises both days, including views on:

  • The strengths of the UK energy sector, including R&D, engineering expertise – including developed through the North Sea experiences, and ability of UK companies to design, operate and manage complex projects;
  • The expected impact of the growth of low carbon and smart energy solutions, from innovations in the interaction between consumers and devices to transformation of distribution networks;
  • Developments in renewables, from Government’s work to create a renewables sector without the need for subsidies, to projected growth in wind and marine renewables;
  • Oil and gas sector – see Energy Summit Day Two.
