Who can visit the library?

IET members and other UK engineering institution members, such as Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) members, may borrow publications that are available for loan.
The library is open to all members of the general public. Non-members can use our facilities for reference purposes only.

Library facilities

  • IET memorabilia sales. Open 9.15am - 5pm to purchase Fellows' and members' ties.
  • Tours of the library and archives are available on request;
  • Library only membership is available for a small annual fee to access all library services, including e-books and e-journals remote access via the Virtual Library;
  • Free WiFi access;
  • High-speed Internet terminals for browsing the web and searching the library online catalogue;
  • Daily newspapers on display;
  • Helpful library staff at the enquiry desk to provide assistance with your enquiry or research;
  • Access to electronic resources such as INSPEC, IEEExplore, Virtual Library, IET Digital Library, British Standards online.

Who can visit the IET Archives? 

The IET Archives are open to members of the IET, academic researchers and any member of the public with a genuine research topic. The majority of our collections are stored off-site with the core collections and rare books libraries remaining at the IET Archives Centre. We require at least one week's notice to retrieve items in preparation for your visit.

Please contact us to book an appointment allowing one week's notice prior to your visit with the details of the material that you would like to consult.
