S811 - Time to Train

Description

Consultation on “Time to train”: IET comments to the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS).

Abstract

The Government needs to do more to effectively recognise the value of professional development and accreditation within the Civil Service. It could lead by example here through mandating industry recognised qualifications in public sector supply contracts. It is important that employers do not see the introduction of a right to training as a relinquishment of their responsibility to train. It is of concern that the role of professional bodies like the IET does not appear to be recognised in the same way that the equally important role of the trade unions appears to be. Professional bodies play a vital role in the development of their profession both in terms of advice, guidance and provision, but also in creating or raising the value of qualifications.
