Consultation on “Promoting achievement, valuing success: a strategy for 14-19 qualifications”: IET comments to the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
Abstract
The goal of simplification of the qualifications system is welcomed. STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects are disproportionately impacted by a lack of understanding of the subjects, study choices and the career options they can lead to. Whilst the primary focus must be on young people, the needs of employers, universities and the wider society must be considered. Ultimately, young people will not be well served by a framework that is not easily understood by those outside the education system. The withdrawal of qualifications with low take-up raises the possibility of valuable STEM courses being stopped or funding being withdrawn. Situations can arise where the skills are still needed despite the demand being in decline. Low take-up might be something that needs to be addressed by programmes to improve take-up, not by stopping the course or withdrawing funding.
