Consultation on “Higher education at work. High skills: high value”: IET comments to the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS).
Abstract
The role that professional bodies like the IET can take in encouraging high level skills in the workforce is significant. Such bodies already work with academia and business on accrediting degree courses, work place learning and helping individuals gain high level skills. The professional bodies are already part of the delivery mechanism for the 21st century skills the UK needs and this role can be strengthened and built upon. The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) appears to have proved successful in encouraging students to remain in school. There is a strong case for assessment of the future employment prospects arising from a particular course and designing fiscal incentives accordingly. Such specific incentives could be targeted on the take-up of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.
