Call for evidence on heat: IET comments to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).
Abstract
The interest now being shown in heat as part of a low carbon energy strategy is welcomed. De-carbonising heat will require emphasis on small scale generation of heat from a wide diversity of sources at local level. It brings into focus the Energy Hierarchy the IET has been advocating for some time, as issues of demand reduction and conversion efficiency on a mass scale are key. For the future, new technologies such as biomass combined heat and power (CHP) and micro-generation bring opportunities to improve matters further. However, too much effort should not be devoted to demonstration of new technologies when large scale deployment of what is already available at low cost would give quicker carbon reduction.
