S785 - Draft Climate Change Bill

Description

Consultation on the Draft Climate Change Bill: IET comments to the Rt Hon David Miliband, MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Abstract The IET believes strongly in the need for urgent action to achieve the UK’s emissions reduction targets, and is therefore in agreement with the spirit of the Climate Change Bill. However, the real challenge lies elsewhere: in ensuring that the policies put in place deliver real emissions reductions. More could be achieved in terms of demonstrating leadership and achieving material emissions reductions if the Government were to embark on a strong and sustained drive to improve Climate Change policies. Despite its value as a gesture of commitment, this Bill will do little to tackle the thorny issue of implementation.
