Abstract
The challenges around energy are enormous and are shared by all member states. In addition, energy is an inter-state matter in terms of supply security, robustness and effectiveness of markets. Thus it would be sensible to co-ordinate more closely to both accelerate the development and adoption of clean energy technologies and to evolve common standards and solutions. Research funding should focus more on the application of existing research and the integration of existing technologies. In practice, this would mean changing the balance of funding in favour of demonstration and pilot projects, rather than pure academic research.
