Description
Abstract The Institution supports a more concerted European energy strategy, provided it endorses and reinforces a shared market regime, recognising both supply and demand sides. A more integrated approach to the energy system as a whole is required. This would include addressing supply and demand in tandem, and focusing more attention on policies to modify energy use in transport and heating in addition to the weight currently given to electricity supplies. Both of these sectors are substantial greenhouse gas emitters and contribute to European dependency on imported fossil fuels. The importance of promoting public understanding of the issues and choices involved in energy policy should not be forgotten.
