Consultation on White Paper on “Our energy challenge – securing clean, affordable energy for the long term”: IEE comments to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Abstract There is enormous technological potential to meet the energy challenge, but policy intervention will be needed to create a sustainable market for it. In order to produce policies that are deliverable within a market framework, government will need to introduce more certainty and co-ordination into the policy process. Greater effort needs to be expended to increase the engagement of consumers of all sizes in energy management, particularly in the transport and domestic sectors. Strategic commitment to policy solutions should be balanced with flexibility to deal with future uncertainties. The government needs to commit to credible policies and objectives for both the medium and long term that have wide support among stakeholders. It also needs to vigorously address adverse policy interactions and delivery bottlenecks.
