Abstract
Optimum use of the all-island indigenous energy sources for electricity generation is essential to preserve the competitive position of both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. A policy of reducing offshore energy dependency should be an attractive driver for energy policy. The other main drivers are climate change mitigation; air and water pollutants; fuel diversity (a subset of security of supply); reduction of offshore energy importation; hedging against fossil fuel price volatility; technology development; indigenous industry (and associated job creation); dispersed (distributed) energy generation; rural development; and consumer demand.
