Margaret Smith has had a career in a variety of blue chip companies having over 35 years of IT experience and 30 years in a managerial capacity. Since January 2006 she has been active as an independent consultant advising a variety of companies on business strategy, IT strategy and communicating effectively with CIO’s and CXO’s. She has also written a series of columns for Computer Weekly and chaired and spoken at a number of high profile conferences.

During 2005 Margaret was the CEO of CIO-Connect, the networking organisation for all UK CIOs.

Prior to this appointment Margaret worked for Legal & General and sat on the UK Board of Directors for 15 years. She joined the company in 1988 and became their CIO in 1989. In 1994 she became MD of an internal start up company, L&G Direct. Within 2 years L&G Direct was the number one insurance company for Life, Pensions and Investments Direct. Part of the remit included launching the first Legal & General website in early 1995. Following on the back of the success of the direct business in late 1997 she became Director, E. This was the first appointment to such a role in the UK. L&G won many awards for their e-business over the following 6 years.  In 2000 Margaret re-assumed the role of CIO.

Margaret was also a Non-Executive Director of Origo Services (the insurance industry standards setting body) for 4 years until 2003. From 1999 to 2001 she sat on the UK Cabinet Office Portal Board.
