Government’s draft National Policy Statement (NPS) on National Networks: IET comments to the Transport Select Committee.
The draft NPS has been published by the Department for Transport under the Planning Act 2008. It sets out the Government’s vision and approach to the development of nationally significant infrastructure projects on the road and rail networks in England, including the development of strategic rail freight interchanges. It also sets out the policy against which the Secretary of State for Transport will make decisions on applications for nationally significant infrastructure projects on the road and rail networks.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology noted that the National Policy Statement highlights the Government’s policy for addressing need in the context of user satisfaction and inter-city capacity and connectivity and that this is a step in the right direction, providing the capacity of local networks are properly taken into consideration. The NPS also takes appropriate account of the impact of new technologies. We believe investment in new technologies across the national networks is crucial to improve efficiency, reduce congestion and reduce the emissions associated with the transport sectors.
