Consultation on “Future policy on higher education tuition fees and student finance arrangements in Northern Ireland”: IET comments to the Department for Employment and Learning (DELNI).
The Northern Ireland (NI) universities must have the same level of funding as other universities in Great Britain. On this basis, DELNI should make up the estimated funding shortfall of £40m, which could in substantial part come from limiting the level of support for NI students studying in GB. Therefore the tuition fee cap should stay at £3,290 subject to inflationary uplift. Higher maintenance grants than those in England are viewed as a contributory factor in ensuring wider higher education participation in NI, particularly by disadvantaged students.
