Consultation on “A regional strategy for widening participation in higher education”: IET comments to the Department for Employment and Learning Northern Ireland (DELNI).
Whilst Northern Ireland’s higher education (HE) establishments feature in the top 3 UK institutions to take students from the lower socio-economic grouping, there remain geographic pockets of under representation. For example, further education (FE) and HE participation is disappointingly low in East Belfast.
The vision is ambitious and laudable. However, it misses the point that a personal aspiration to work towards attending higher education needs to be fostered through many educational stages before the individual’s first day on an HE course.
Any efforts to raise education goals must be matched by equal efforts to ensure that there are the job opportunities to fulfil these self betterment ambitions. This requires close working between industry, FE and HE, and government over protracted periods.
