S867 - Review of the teaching funding method

Statement on the purpose of HEFCE’s funding for teaching: IET comments to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Abstract The IET broadly agrees with the statement. Public funding must continue to contribute to teaching in higher education. This is particularly important for high cost subjects such as engineering. The total funding that engineering departments receive for teaching must be sufficient to meet costs and allow for the delivery of high quality education. The financial contribution that engineering students make towards their degrees should not be so high as to deter individuals from opting to take engineering. Relationships between the universities and employers must be encouraged by HEFCE’s funding method.
