Science and engineering assurance review of the Department for Business Innovation and Skills: IET comments to the BIS.
There is no evidence to suggest that BIS is more or less effective at using science and engineering evidence than other government departments. It is difficult to gauge how much use is made of the advice offered as little if any feedback is received. However, the department could make more use of the offer of unbiased evidence-based advice, particularly in the early stages of policy formation. All too often engineering input is sought long after policies have been decided, to the detriment of the policies in the longer term. It is worth noting that the engineering institutions are still not represented on the Ministerial Advisory Group on Manufacturing.
